Why Sloths Move So Slowly (It’s a Survival Strategy)
Sloths have a reputation for being lazy, but their slow pace is a highly effective survival strategy. Their diet of leaves provides very little energy, so they conserve it by moving slowly, with the lowest metabolic rate of any mammal. But there’s another reason: camouflage. Moving slowly helps them avoid detection by predators like harpy eagles and jaguars, which rely on movement to spot prey. A sloth’s fur even hosts a miniature ecosystem of algae, giving it a greenish tint that helps it blend in with the trees. What looks like laziness is actually a masterclass in energy conservation and stealth.
