How Penguins Stay Warm in Freezing Conditions

Penguin Huddle
Penguins are the ultimate survivors of the cold. Their secret is a multi-layered defense. First, they have a dense layer of waterproof feathers that trap air for insulation. Underneath, they have a thick layer of blubber. But their most clever adaptation is behavioral: huddling. Emperor penguins form massive huddles where thousands of individuals pack together, rotating positions so that no penguin stays on the frigid outer edge for too long. The center of the huddle can be up to 20 degrees Celsius warmer than the outside air. It’s a strategy that relies on complete cooperation for the survival of the group.
