When you type a message to Claude, a lot happens before you see a response. Understanding the basics of how Claude works can help you use it more effectively and set realistic expectations. Claude is what's called a large language model, or LLM. It was trained on a massive amount of text — books, websites, articles, code, and more — and through that training, it learned patterns in language that let it generate coherent, contextually appropriate responses.
But Claude isn't just pattern-matching in a simple sense. The model uses a transformer architecture, the same foundational design that powers most modern AI language systems. At a high level, this architecture lets the model pay attention to different parts of the input text simultaneously, weighing which words and phrases are most relevant to producing the next part of its response. That's how it can maintain context across a long conversation.
What makes Claude somewhat unique is the training methodology Anthropic uses. They developed something called Constitutional AI, which involves giving the model a set of principles and then using AI-generated feedback to reinforce behavior aligned with those principles. The idea is to make the model helpful, harmless, and honest in a more robust way than just filtering outputs after the fact.
Claude also has a large context window, meaning it can hold a lot of information in 'memory' during a single conversation. This matters a lot for practical tasks — like reading a 50-page document you paste in, or maintaining coherence over a very long back-and-forth exchange.
It's worth knowing what Claude can't do, too. It doesn't browse the internet in real time unless that feature is specifically enabled. It doesn't remember previous conversations unless you share that context again. And like any language model, it can sometimes be confidently wrong. Using Claude well means treating it as a very capable collaborator, not an infallible oracle.
