Claude's Multilingual Capabilities: Languages It Handles Well

Claude AI Multilingual Capabilities
Claude can work in many languages beyond English, and for professionals and organizations operating globally, understanding its multilingual capabilities and limits is important.

Claude handles the major European languages — Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese — with high quality. Grammar, vocabulary, and stylistic appropriateness are generally excellent in these languages, making Claude useful for translation, multilingual customer communications, and content creation.

For Asian languages — Mandarin Chinese, Japanese, Korean — Claude's performance is strong but requires more care. The model can read and write in these languages fluently, but nuances of formality, regional variation (e.g., traditional vs simplified Chinese; Taiwanese vs mainland usage), and culturally appropriate phrasing may require review by native speakers for high-stakes outputs.

Arabic, Hindi, and other major languages with large numbers of speakers are also within Claude's capability, though quality may vary more across different registers and dialects.

For lower-resource languages — less widely spoken languages with limited representation in internet text — Claude's capability drops significantly. It may be able to do basic tasks but with lower reliability.

Practical tips for multilingual work: specify the specific variety of a language when it matters (Brazilian vs European Portuguese; Simplified vs Traditional Chinese). Ask Claude to flag anything it's uncertain about. Have native speakers review outputs that will be used in professional or public contexts. And for translation of technical, legal, or medical content, consider professional human translation for final review.

Cross-lingual tasks — like asking Claude to summarize a French document in English — tend to work well because Claude can draw on its stronger English capabilities for the output while still processing the source language accurately.
