Understanding the Dubai Visa System for Workers

UAE visa documents and passport
Dubai Work Visa Guide
The UAE's residence visa system has evolved considerably in recent years and is now more flexible than it was a decade ago. The standard employment visa is sponsored by your employer and tied to the organisation — when the employment relationship ends, you enter a grace period during which you can look for new employment or must exit. For most professions, this grace period is 180 days. The work ban — a restriction on working for a competitor if you left before contract completion — was largely abolished for most workers, removing a significant deterrent to changing jobs. The UAE introduced the Green Visa in 2022, a self-sponsored visa for skilled workers and freelancers who meet income thresholds, giving 5 years of residency without dependence on an employer. The Golden Visa, originally focused on property investors, has expanded to cover outstanding professionals in science, engineering, medicine, education, and the arts. Qualifying criteria include salary thresholds, employer type, and professional credentials. Freelancers can obtain a dedicated freelancer permit through several free zones including Dubai Media City, Dubai Internet City, and Fujairah Creative City, which allows them to invoice clients legally and obtain residency without a formal employer. Dependants — spouse and children — are added to the primary visa holder's file and require proof of minimum salary thresholds to sponsor.
