Eastern Horizons
The shift from ‘Look East’ to ‘Act East’ was more than just a name change. In the 90s, ‘Look East’ was about simply opening up to Southeast Asia for trade. ‘Act East’ is about strategic convergence. We are now building trilateral highways, conducting naval exercises with Vietnam, and competing with China for influence in ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations). Why the change? China’s aggressive behavior in the South China Sea changed everything. India realized that if we don’t have a strong presence in the Indo-Pacific, our eastern flank is exposed. The Northeast Indian states are the land bridge to this region. For decades, we neglected connectivity there. Now, we are building roads to Myanmar and Thailand. It’s a slow process, but it’s correcting a historical oversight. India is finally looking East with seriousness, not just curiosity.
