Traveling India on a Budget
India has a reputation for being a budget traveler's paradise, and it is absolutely true. I traveled for two months on a budget of around fifty dollars a day, and I was living comfortably. But you can do it for much less if you are willing to make some compromises. The biggest expense is usually accommodation. I stayed in a mix of hostels, budget hotels, and homestays. Hostels in India are surprisingly good. They are often clean, have good wifi, and are a great way to meet other travelers. A dorm bed usually costs between five and ten dollars a night. For food, I mostly ate at local restaurants and street stalls. A thali, a meal with rice, bread, and several curries, usually costs a couple of dollars. Street food like samosas, vada pav, and momos are even cheaper. For transportation, trains are the cheapest way to travel long distances. Sleeper class is the most budget friendly, but it can be crowded and noisy. If you have a bit more to spend, AC 3 tier is a good compromise. Buses are another option, especially for shorter distances. State run buses are cheaper than private ones, but private buses are usually more comfortable. The key to traveling India on a budget is to be flexible and to be willing to eat and sleep like a local. You will save money and have a more authentic experience.
