The Ultimate Beginner’s Guide to National Parks (Without the Crowds)

Sunrise over a misty mountain valley in a national park

Let’s be honest, your first visit to a National Park can be intimidating. I showed up at Zion in July once, and the line for the shuttle was longer than the hike itself. I learned the hard way. The secret to enjoying parks like Yosemite, Yellowstone, or the Grand Canyon isn't a secret at all—it’s timing. Go in the shoulder season. May or September are golden. If you have to go in summer, wake up at 4:30 AM. I know it sounds painful, but watching the sunrise over Half Dome with only three other people around is worth the missed sleep. Also, don’t sleep on the less famous parks. Great Basin in Nevada or North Cascades in Washington offer the same majesty without the traffic jams.
