The Sun Temple of Konark
The Sun Temple at Konark in Odisha is one of those places that leaves you speechless. Built in the 13th century, it was designed as a giant chariot for the sun god Surya, with twelve pairs of intricately carved stone wheels and seven horses. I arrived early in the morning to beat the heat and the crowds, and I am glad I did. The temple is massive, and the level of detail in the carvings is astonishing. Every inch of the stone is covered with images of deities, animals, and scenes from daily life. The wheels are particularly famous. They are not just decorative. They serve as sundials, and you can tell the time by the shadows they cast. Only part of the temple remains today. The main sanctum, which was topped by a massive tower, collapsed in the 19th century, but what remains is still awe inspiring. I spent a couple of hours walking around the complex, trying to take it all in. Nearby, the Konark Archaeological Museum has some of the sculptures that have been recovered from the site, including the famous erotic carvings that the temple is known for. If you are interested in history or architecture, Konark is a must visit. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage site, and it is easy to combine with a trip to the nearby city of Bhubaneswar, which is known as the Temple City of India.
