The Forgotten Front: Africa's Role in World War II
When we think about World War II, our minds often go straight to Europe and the Pacific. But there was another crucial battleground that rarely gets the attention it deserves. North Africa saw some of the most brutal tank battles in human history. The desert warfare between Rommel's Afrika Korps and the Allied forces shaped the entire trajectory of the war. I remember standing in El Alamein a few years back, just staring at the endless sand. It hits you differently when you realize thousands of young men fought and died right there. The conditions were beyond horrible. Temperatures soaring past 100 degrees during the day, freezing at night. Sand got into everything, weapons, food, eyes. Yet these soldiers kept pushing forward. The campaign ultimately gave the Allies a launching pad into Italy and marked the beginning of the end for Axis control in the region. There's a reason why veterans who served there carry those memories more vividly than most.
