Philosophy as a Way of Life: Pierre Hadot's Insight
We often treat philosophy as a set of abstract theories to be studied. But the ancient Greeks and Romans saw it differently. For them, philosophy was a way of life—a set of spiritual exercises aimed at transforming one’s way of being. The 20th-century philosopher Pierre Hadot excavated this ancient view. He showed that for the Stoics, it was about practicing mindfulness; for the Epicureans, it was about learning to limit desire; for the Platonists, it was about turning the soul towards the good. Hadot’s insight is radical: philosophy is not just something you *know*, it’s something you *do*. It’s a practice of attention, a training in how to live, and a preparation for death. In a world of distraction, this ancient wisdom is more relevant than ever. It invites us to stop simply reading about philosophy and to start living it.
