Overfitting vs. Underfitting: The Goldilocks Problem
I remember training my first model and seeing 99% accuracy on the training data. I thought I was a genius. Then I ran it on the test data and it got 50%. That was my introduction to overfitting. It’s basically the model memorizing the answers instead of learning the patterns. On the flip side, underfitting is when your model is too simple to capture any trend at all. Finding that sweet spot is what makes this job so tricky. It’s a constant battle of adjusting parameters, adding regularization, and cross-validating until you get it just right.
