Every day, billions of posts go up on Facebook and Instagram. Most are fine. Some are hate speech. Some are misinformation. Some are child exploitation. Meta hires thousands of moderators to catch the bad ones. They sit in rooms. They watch horrible things. Many develop PTSD.
But even with all that effort, bad content slips through. The Christchurch shooting was livestreamed on Facebook. Myanmar's military used Facebook to spread genocide propaganda. Meta apologized each time. Then it happened again.
The problem is scale. No human team can review billions of posts. So Meta uses AI. AI catches obvious stuff. But AI cannot understand context. A post that says "kill your local politician" might be a joke. Or a threat. AI does not know.
For beginners, this is the hardest problem in tech. Free speech vs. safety. Speed vs. accuracy. Meta is failing at both. But honestly, no company has solved it. Not Twitter. Not TikTok. Not YouTube. We are all learning in public. And the lessons are painful.
