Investing in America for Beginners – Index Funds, ETFs, and Avoiding Scams
You want to start investing in America. Great. But let me stop you before you buy Bitcoin because your cousin said it's going to the moon. Start simple. Open an account with Vanguard, Fidelity, or Schwab. These are trusted companies that have been around for decades. Not Robinhood if you're a beginner – it makes trading too easy and encourages bad habits. What should you buy? An S&P 500 index fund like VOO or SPY. That fund owns the 500 largest American companies – Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Nvidia, etc. When they make money, you make money. Over the last 50 years, the S&P 500 has returned about 10% per year on average. That means your money doubles every 7 years. Don't buy individual stocks. Don't buy options. Don't buy crypto unless you understand you might lose everything. Another good option is a total market ETF like VTI. Or a target date fund if you want to be completely hands off. The most important thing? Time in the market beats timing the market. Invest a fixed amount every month – $100, $500, whatever you can. Do it automatically. And don't check your portfolio every day. That will drive you crazy. Check once a year. Really. Set it and forget it.
