Finding Peace in Varanasi: A Guide to the Ghats

Sunrise over the Ganges River with boats and ghats in Varanasi
Varanasi Ghats at Sunrise
Varanasi is unlike any place I have ever been. It is raw, it is ancient, and it confronts you with life and death in a way that is both unsettling and beautiful. I arrived there feeling overwhelmed by the chaos of India, and I left with a sense of calm I did not know was possible. The ghats, the series of steps leading down to the Ganges River, are the heart of the city. I spent my first evening on Dashashwamedh Ghat watching the Ganga Aarti ceremony. Hundreds of people gathered as priests in saffron robes performed rituals with fire and incense, all set to the sound of chanting and bells. It felt surreal. The next morning, I woke up before sunrise and took a boat ride on the river. Watching the sun rise over the water, seeing people doing their morning prayers and yoga on the steps, it was a moment of pure stillness. My advice is to hire a boat for yourself for at least an hour. It is cheap, and it gives you the best view of the ghats. Be respectful, keep your camera out of people's faces during ceremonies, and just let the place work its magic on you.
