Essential Safety Tips for Women Traveling in India
As a woman traveling solo in India, I had a lot of concerns before I went. I read all the stories, and I was nervous. But I went, and I had an incredible time, and I never felt unsafe. That said, there are things you need to be aware of. First, dress modestly. This is not just about safety, it is about respect for local culture. I wore loose pants or long skirts and tops that covered my shoulders and chest. I also carried a scarf, which was useful for covering up when I needed to. Second, trust your gut. If a situation feels off, leave. If a man is making you uncomfortable, be firm and loud. I found that a sharp no thank you, spoken with confidence, was usually enough. Third, avoid being out alone late at night. I was usually back at my accommodation by dark, or if I was out, I was with people I trusted. Fourth, choose your accommodation carefully. I stayed in hostels and homestays that had good reviews from other solo female travelers. They were often great sources of advice and company. Finally, use the women's compartments on trains and metros. They are a safe space and are usually less crowded. India can be a challenging place for women travelers, but with the right precautions, it is also an incredibly rewarding one. The women I met, both travelers and locals, were some of the kindest and most supportive people I have ever encountered.
