Dubai's Souks Beyond Gold: Spice, Textile, and Fish Markets

Dubai Souk Shopping Guide
Most visitors know the Gold Souk, but fewer make it to the nearby Spice Souk and Textile Souk, both of which are worth as much or more time. The Spice Souk in Deira occupies a covered arcade a short walk from the Gold Souk, its shops opening onto the street with burlap sacks and glass jars of dried goods — whole nutmeg, cumin, dried limes, pink peppercorns, turmeric, saffron from Iran and from Afghanistan, rose petals, incense and oud blends. Shopkeepers are welcoming and the fragrance is powerful from two streets away. Bargaining on spices is common and expected. Saffron here is significantly cheaper than in Europe or North America, even the genuine Kashmiri and Iranian varieties — worth buying in quantity. The Textile Souk on the Bur Dubai side of the Creek is a long covered market selling fabrics from India, China, and the Gulf — silks, cottons, linens, and synthetic blends in every colour, alongside ready-made traditional garments. The best items are Indian embroidered fabrics and the rich silk fabrics used in traditional Emirati dress. Tailors operate in and around the souk and can make custom garments quickly. The Deira Fish Market, while not a traditional tourist souk, is a working wholesale and retail market selling the day's catch from the Gulf — fresh hammour, kingfish, shrimp, and more. The best time to visit is early morning when the catch is freshest.
