Dubai's Cultural Institutions: Art, Heritage, and Museums

Modern art museum in Dubai
Dubai Art and Culture Guide
The cultural narrative around Dubai used to be simple — there wasn't any. That narrative is now outdated. The Museum of the Future, which opened in 2022, is one of the most visually striking buildings on earth — a torus shape covered in Arabic calligraphy, it houses immersive exhibitions about possible futures for humanity that are genuinely thought-provoking. It is also very Instagrammable, which does not hurt. The Dubai Frame includes a thoughtfully curated museum about the city's past and future transformation. The Al Shindagha Museum complex in the heritage area covers the history of the Creek, the pearl diving industry, and the natural environment of the UAE with excellent production values. Etihad Museum near the Jumeirah coast tells the story of UAE federation — the union of the seven emirates — through documents and artefacts including the table on which the union agreement was signed. The art scene centres on Alserkal Avenue in Al Quoz, an industrial district that has been colonised by galleries, studios, and creative businesses. The galleries here are serious — they represent internationally significant artists and the programme of exhibitions and events is worth following year-round. The Dubai Design District is a newer creative quarter with showrooms, studios, and a retail concept that attracts design professionals. Art Dubai, the annual fair held in March, draws galleries and collectors from across the world.
