Claude for Education: How Students and Teachers Are Using It

Education might be one of the domains where Claude is having the most interesting impact — and also one of the most debated. Here's how students and teachers are actually using it, beyond the headline stories about AI cheating.

Teachers are using Claude to generate differentiated materials — the same lesson content adapted for different reading levels, or the same math problem explained three different ways. This used to take a significant amount of time; Claude can generate multiple versions in seconds, which teachers then review and refine.

Curriculum planning is another use case. Teachers are asking Claude to help them design project-based learning units, suggest discussion questions for a novel, or build rubrics for assessment. Again, Claude handles the first draft; the teacher brings expertise and context.

For students, the honest reality is that some are using Claude to write their essays for them, which is the version everyone hears about. But many students are using it in ways that genuinely support learning: asking it to explain a concept they didn't understand in class, having it quiz them before an exam, asking it to critique a draft they wrote and tell them what's weak.

Language learning is a particularly good fit. Students can practice conversations in a target language, ask Claude to correct their grammar and explain why, and get immediate feedback in a way that's impossible to replicate with a human tutor for every session.

The ethical questions are real. Using AI to write your essay doesn't help you learn to write. But the answer isn't to pretend AI doesn't exist — it's to design learning experiences that develop skills AI can't replace, and to teach students how to use these tools productively rather than as shortcuts.

The most thoughtful educators are redesigning assignments around this reality: in-class writing, oral defenses, projects that require genuine original thinking. That's probably where education goes from here.
