Animal Movie Review
Sandeep Reddy Vanga's Animal is perhaps the most polarizing film of 2023. It's a dark, unflinching exploration of toxic masculinity, father-son dynamics, and violence. Ranbir Kapoor delivers a career-defining performance as Ranvijay Singh, a man whose desperate need for his father's approval turns him into a violent monster. The film is unapologetically graphic—the violence is raw, visceral, and uncomfortable. Bobby Deol as the antagonist is chilling with almost no dialogue. Rashmika Mandanna plays the long-suffering wife whose role sparked debates about the film's portrayal of women. At three-and-a-half hours, the film is excessive, but that's by design. Vanga's style is maximalist—every scene is designed to provoke a reaction. The action sequences are brutal and inventive, particularly the pre-interval axe fight and the climax shootout. The film divided critics and audiences, with some hailing it as a masterpiece of dark cinema and others criticizing its misogyny. Regardless of where you stand, Animal is impossible to ignore. The music, especially "Arjan Vailly," became a cultural phenomenon. Animal is streaming on Netflix. To watch it for free, you can use a friend's or family member's Netflix account if they're willing to share. Some local Internet cafes or community centers sometimes host movie screenings. Always choose legal streaming to support the creators behind such ambitious projects.
